Choosing Granite Countertops

Granite countertops are natural stone countertops that have polished and cut into an aesthetic, strong, and durable addition to your kitchen. Granite is considered a high-end product, with prices ranging from $60 to $120 per square foot. When making an investment of this size, it is best to have as much information as possible.

The cost of granite countertops is not related as much to the cost of the stone itself, but the costs related to cutting, transporting, and installing the countertop. There are different grades of granite, typically grouped into tiers. The tiers are determined by the granite’s attributes including country of origin, color, patterns, thickness, and amount of soft minerals in the granite.

The first tier is considered premium and usually sells for the highest price. Lower tiers are usually referred to as commercial grade. Granite in these lower grades can sometimes be harder than first tier granite, but may also have more pits. The cost of your granite countertop can also be affected by the number of cuts or seams that need to be made on the countertop and the amount of waste. The granite that is wasted creating the countertop is paid for by the homeowner.

It is possible to get discounted granite. Discounted granite countertops are usually thinner cut and sometimes applied to a piece of plywood backing for added stability. Discounted granite can also come from countries where hourly wages are lower and pre-fabrication is done ahead of time.

Granite is available in hundreds of different colors, naturally. However, because the stone is natural, the color has what is referred to as movement. Color and patterns may change along the stone. No two granite countertops are the same. If you need a large countertop, it may be a good idea to choose a slab from your local dealer that your countertop can be cut from.

Once you have made the decision to purchase a granite countertop, how do you take care of it? They are very easy to care for, although there are a few things you should know. Granite is extremely hard, a seven on the Mohs hardness scale. Diamonds are a ten on the scale. It is difficult to scratch your granite countertop, but it will chip. These chips can be repaired by a professional, and you may never know it was there!

Cleaning your granite countertop can be simple. Mild detergent and warm water will do the trick. You should avoid harsh chemicals and cleaners that can damage the surface of your countertop. Liquids like alcohol and lemon juice can dull the granite, so clean any spills immediately. Use protective measures like coasters for drinks, hotpads for hot pans, and cutting boards when preparing foods.

Granite has been used in different ways throughout history. It was used to build ancient cities and historic buildings. Adding granite to your kitchen or bathroom can create a beautiful, warm feel. Best of all, granite countertops that are well cared for tend to retain their value when selling your home better than other countertop types.
