Silestone is the leading manufacturer of quartz countertops. These countertops are man-made, but are designed to look like any other natural stone surface such as granite. They are made by combining quartz with binding resin and pigments. The result is a countertop that is beautiful and durable. Silestone countertops are considered a high-end product and have a high-end price tag to match. They are typically priced well over $100 per square foot. So what sets these countertops apart? Why should you consider putting them in your kitchen?
First, quartz is one of the hardest substances around, a seven on the Mohs hardness scale. Just as a comparison, diamonds are a ten on the scale. This means that you can't easily damage a Silestone countertop. It will resist cuts, slices, and scratches. However, it is a good idea to still use a cutting board or other surface when preparing food. It is also very resistant to heat. You could set a hot pan on it, but it is still wise to use a hot pad.
Second, Silestone countertops are non-porous. This means that they won’t stain easily. It resists any kind of common household product stains, such as wine, coffee, marker, or oil stains. All you need to do is wipe the stains, or entire countertop, with warm soapy water. They are extremely easy to maintain. In fact, you should not use any harsh chemicals on your Silestone countertop. Also, because the countertops are non-porous, there is no odor or mold buildup. Another easy maintenance feature is that there is no need to seal quartz countertops. They are maintenance free!
Quartz countertops are often compared to granite countertops, but there are some distinct differences between the two. Silestone countertops are more uniform in pattern and color because they are man-made. They don't include the natural blemishes or color variations that are found in real stone. Quartz countertops are also much easier to care for and maintain than granite. Compared to solid surface countertops, quartz countertops are harder and less susceptible to scratches or burn marks.
Silestone is not the only manufacturer of quartz countertops. However, the company you choose will depend on delivery and sales, color, or added features. You want the countertop to fit your personal style. Silestone does offer one additional feature not found at its competitors, Microban antimicrobial product protection. They introduced this feature in 2005. The Microban protection becomes a part of the molecular structure of the countertop during production, so the protection will not wash off or fade away. Of course, regular cleaning is still necessary, but the Microban does add one additional layer of protection against common bacteria, yeasts, molds, and fugi.
Silestone countertops are not your only option for quartz surfaces in your home. Silestone can be used in the kitchen, bathroom, or as flooring in any room of the house. Quartz makes beautiful countertops and backsplashes, but it can also make a new bathroom dazzle as tub surrounds or shower walls.
There are many countertop options out there. Which one you choose will depend on your budget, home, and personal taste. Silestone countertops could be right for you!
